Academy of Realist Art's fine art workshops include drawing, painting, figure, portraiture, and landscape, as well as special art travel and tours. Scroll down to see the current workshops.Group sizes are kept quite small, so each participant gets lots of one-on-one attention from our superb instructors. ARA instructors teach year-round so, unlike many artists who offer summer/holiday workshops, our teachers are professional teachers as well as successful, award-winning artists.Workshop Hours & Schedules:Most workshops are scheduled five days per week, Monday to Friday. The hours are usually 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but will occasionally go to 5:00 p.m. If you are coming from out of town and need local accommodations, we have a list of inexpensive places to stay near the Studios.Workshop Fees (in Canadian dollars):One-Week Workshops: $600Two-Week Workshops: $975, with the early-registration discount. In the Studios of the Dutch and Flemish Masters - Still Life

This intensive, two-week still life workshop explores the use of light, colour, and texture in a style similar to the Dutch and Flemish masters. As students learn to paint a beautiful still life using classic methods, they are introduced to valuable Old Master concepts such as massing of tonal values, chiaroscuro, "selective focus”, and layering to achieve a luminous picture.

Utilizing a copy of an old master painting you will learn the step-by-step academic process that leads to an exact copy. You will gain a clear understanding of the traditional materials, techniques and principles of oil painting. You will learn the important concepts of massing of tonal values, planning light and dark values (chiaroscuro), selective focus and the technique of layering. Used together , these make a luminous painting. Previous participants have been astounded at the professional appearance of their finished work!

Ecorche is a figure sculpture showing the muscles of the body without skin. Ecorche literally means "flayed". This method of study was used in the French Academies in the 19th century. Ecorche study solidifies a student's understanding of the forms of the body and helps improve their figure drawing skills.The Academy of Realist Art, Boston has scheduled Andrew Ameral to teach a two week ecorche workshop. Andrew attended the Florence Academy of Art from 1998 - 2007 and was the school's Director of Anatomy from 2002 - 2008. An affable and informative instructor Andy will engage students with lecture and hands on learning. Using oil based clay students will first build a sculpture of the skull and then apply muscles.  A skeletal and live model will be available for reference. Landscape Drawing

In this five-day workshop, students learn to create beautiful studies from nature using classical drawing methods and a variety of dry media, such as graphite, chalk, charcoal, and ink.  Following an informative daily lecture and demonstration, students will work outdoors to study nature directly from life and execute a variety of small drawings. This workshop will appeal to beginners interested in learning the basics of landscape drawing, as well as experienced artists wanting to improve their technique. Skills learned in this drawing course can also be applied to the painted landscape.

This intensive 10-day workshop will help students achieve power and painterly effects using classic techniques such as were used in Rubens’ time. Participants will explore the art of uniting observed reality with imaginative or stylized representation; one of the cornerstones of Baroque era artistic sensibilities. Suitable for all levels of experience, this course will be primarily devoted to creating a copy, in oil, from a masterwork by Rubens using similar techniques as might have been used in his studio. Reference will also be made to live models and other artwork to facilitate a better understanding of the process.

Academy Director and Senior Instructor Fernando Freitas takes students through the stages of the Tenebrist approach to oil painting in this two-week workshop. Similar to the much-loved “In the Studios of the Old Masters” workshop, this program teaches the chiaroscuro approach (which means light/dark, or light and shade) used by such artists as Rembrandt and Caravaggio. Working from a selected study, students learn the specific step-by-step process to achieve an exact copy, as well as gain a clear understanding of the principles of oil painting, and the best techniques and materials to use. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.

Portrait Painting from a Photo

This new five-day workshop focuses on creating a painted portrait using a photo reference (subject to instructor approval). Participants learn the key principles of what information to keep and what to omit, as well as covers such areas as form, value, shape and finished processes. Students of all levels are welcome. However, beginners will use a very limited palette while the more advanced students will use a broader palette. A handout will be provided prior to the start of the workshop to outline photo requirements.
