Virtual Portrait Drawing (Monday evenings)


Learn the art of portrait drawing using our step-by-step method. This workshop will cover blocking in, comparative measurement, proportion, division of light and dark, articulation, and finishing.

Learn the art of portrait drawing using our step-by-step method.

Using live Zoom demos, Instructor Suwhan Lim will demonstrate the stages of academic portrait drawing such as blocking in, completed constructs, comparative measurement, proportion, division of light and dark, and articulation as it relates to portraiture. Students will also be introduced to the fundamentals of finishing their drawings in graphite, carbon, or charcoal through big, medium, and small form modeling.

Students will choose from a set of photographs or images of master drawings/paintings to copy from. Students may use their own photos or images, but they must be approved by the instructor.

This 8-week virtual workshop will meet for instruction and critiques through Zoom video conferencing on Mondays, 6:30-9 pm ET. Please note the first class will run shorter, ending at around 8:00 PM.

Full workshop price is $500, payable up front to save your spot.


Drawing Instruments

  • Graphite – 2B, HB, and 2H. Brand – Staedtler
Either Carbon or Charcoal Pencils (choose one):
  • Carbon – 4B, 2B and B. Brands – Wolff's or Conte Carbone
  • Charcoal – Hard, Medium, Soft.  Brands – Generals or Grumbacher
  • Nitram charcoal (optional) – 1 pack of each: Nitram charcoal sticks in H, HB; and 6 or 8 mm extra soft round-petit batons (6 mm preferred)

Drawing Board

  • 1 – 18X24 inches


  • Pad of cartridge or bond paper, 18X24 inches
  • You will also need one sheet of good paper (cut to 18X24 inches) of your choice. Some suggested brands – Canson (Ingres, or Dessin), Fabriano (Ingres, Artistico, or FA5), Strathmore 500 Charcoal Paper, Strathmore Ingres, Arches (90 lb or 300 lb hot press), Somerset, Mayfair, Fabriano Roma paper (for Nitram), St Armand (for Nitram)


  • Sanding block
  • Knitting needle 2.5 to 3.5 mm thickness
  • Masking tape
  • Eraser - one white, one kneadable
  • Pencil extender
  • Mahl stick (a ½ inch diameter dowel approximately 30 inches)
  • Stomps


Please bring filbert brushes. Flats and rounds not necessary. Note – do not buy expensive brushes for drawing.
  • 2 synthetic bristle hair brushes - sizes #2 or #4, and #10
  • 2 synthetic soft hair brushes - sizes #2 or #4, and #10
