With rising numbers of COVID cases and increasing public health measures in Ontario, we have made the difficult decision to close the doors to our physical location until February 10, 2021.
If you are interested in joining our virtual instructional programs, please contact Colleen at firstname.lastname@example.org or 416-766-1280 to make arrangements. If you haven't studied with us before, pre-requisites may be required.
Thank you all for your continued support.
Date: Mar 26, 2021 - Mar 28, 2021
Duration: 3 Days
Location: ARA Toronto
Instructor: Esteban Rodriguez
Please note: SPACE IS LIMITED. Registrations are not guaranteed until a deposit has been paid. If you require more information call 416-766-1280.
This 3-day workshop is an introduction to the Alla Prima method, which means “all at once.” This is a method that has to be done in one section, wet-into-wet, where each brushstroke counts. Using this approach, artists can develop a better vocabulary of paint and brush handling toward achieving expressive, yet realistic portraits in a more immediate way. Participants will execute one sketch each day throughout the workshop, from a range of different points using live models. This course is suitable for all levels.
Each participant gets lots of one-on-one attention from our superb instructors. ARA instructors teach year round so, unlike many artists who offer summer/holiday workshops our instructors are professional teachers as well as successful award-winning artists. Whether you are an award-winning experienced artist or have never painted before, our instructors will tailor to your skill level.
Workshops at our physical location start at 10 am and end at 4 pm each day.
If you have any questions or are having trouble with online registration, please contact us.
MASKS AND HAND HYGIENE ON ARRIVAL
On entering the Columbus Centre, please use the hand sanitization stations in the lobby and elevator. Upon arriving on the 3rd floor, all arriving students are also expected to wash their hands in one of the sinks in the Figure and Workshop rooms.
Students and instructors are expected to wear masks at all times.
All horses and easels will be taped and placed 6 feet apart to ensure enough distance between you and your neighbours. These are not to be moved. Instructors will wear masks at all times and practice social distancing while instructing.
SANITIZATION STATIONS AND COMMON AREAS
Frequent hand sanitization throughout your time in the school is asked. Sanitization stations are located outside of each studio. The lunch room will not be available, so please plan accordingly and follow social distancing rules during breaks.
We ask that any students who are feeling unwell or who have had recent close contact with a confirmed case, please stay home and self-isolate. Contact us before your workshop starts and we will issue a refund or apply your deposit to future workshop.
Please note the travel restrictions that are in place during the pandemic, and respect required 14-day quarantine periods if you have traveled recently. If you are coming from out of town and need local accommodations, click here to see our list of inexpensive places to stay near the Academy.
We offer our workshops on a regular basis. Sign up for regular email workshop updates on our homepage.
Where to buy art supplies?
Five 11” x 14” acrylic gesso or oil primed panel or canvases. Panels should be used since they are more portable and have a smoother surface (which is also preferable for both detail and brushwork). Good quality prepared panels, such as Ampersand and RayMar (with Portrait Grade Claussens linen) are available at nearby art stores (i.e., close to the Academy): Aboveground Art Supplies or Articulations. Please ask at the stores as they have other fine choices, as well.
COLOURS (oil paint only):
Titanium White and Cremnitz (Lead) White (if available)
Yellow Ochre PALE (Winsor & Newton)
Cadmium Yellow Light
