Direct painting is a synthesis of techniques that allows for efficiency of execution, but without compromising any of the principles of quality, craftsmanship, and draftsmanship.
In this instructional video, instructor Esteban Rodriguez will guide you through his personal step-by-step process of painting a still life in oils. His direct painting approach blends the layering and glazing methods used by most old masters with the modern alla prima style that features wet-into-wet paint application. Painting wet-into-wet allows for faster and more expressive results, while layering paint lean to fat creates a system and lends structure to the whole process.
In addition to looking at different aspects of light and painting in oils, one of the highlights of this video is the demonstration of how to approach painting different textures, such as glass, wood, and metal.
You’ll be able to follow Esteban’s approach to tackling a dense composition: what he chooses to paint first and what to leave for a later time. He also discusses how to see things in a very simple and abstract way early on, building up to the finest details.
Esteban’s still life composition is inspired by the 1930s Cuba, where rum cocktails represent the political climate of the island.
